Why We Baptize
Romans 6:1-10 King James Version (KJV) 1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Introduction: There is much confusion regarding baptism because people are ignorant of what the Bible teaches. The early churches understood and practiced it correctly, but over time people became more and more ignorant of its purpose and fell into many abuses. The idea grew that one becomes a Christian through baptism. Then, when the Roman emperor Constantine converted to Christianity, he wanted everyone to be Christian. In the year 324, he offered 20 pieces of silver and a white robe to all who would be baptized. Twelve thousand people immediately took advantage of his offer. And if baptism makes one a Christian, then why not baptize infants as well? So this became more and more the custom. Baptism by immersion was universally practiced until the year 1300 when the Roman Church began to baptize by pouring and later by sprinkling. This change came about for reasons of convenience. Therefore, we find ourselves at this time with much confusion regarding the matter of baptism. We want to stick to the simple teaching of the Bible. Baptism is not mentioned in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, we find John the Baptist baptizing in the desert, and many came to him to be baptized, including Jesus himself. When Jesus completed his ministry here on earth, he left his disciples with the commandment to baptize their converts. So, we baptize because: I. It is a commandment of Jesus. Matt. 28:16-20 A. They had to make disciples first. 1) Not through baptism. 2) The word “disciple” means follower. The schools of that time did not have buildings. The students of a teacher followed him wherever he went, and he taught them. They were called his disciples. B. The word “baptize” means to immerse. 1) We cannot fulfill his commandment in any other way. 2) It is only by immersion that we can fulfill the purpose of baptism. II. We baptize to publicly show the new relationship that the believer has with God. A. Baptism illustrates death to the past sinful life. 1) Through baptism, the believer declares that he has found in Christ something better than sin could offer him. 2) It is as if they have died to their past life. a) The past life has lost its attraction for them. b) In Romans 6:1-2, when it speaks of sin, it refers to the nature of sin, as distinct from the sins that are the manifestation of that nature. c) It's not that they don't sin anymore. Sin is so much a part of human life that there is no one who does not sin. It's that sin has lost its importance for them. d) Therefore, when those being baptized go under the water, it is a demonstration that they have died to their past life. III. We baptize to show the new life. When they rise from the water, it is to show that they have been resurrected to a new life. A. It shows that they now live for God instead of for sin and for themselves. 1) This means they have found something in Christ of greater value than sin. 2) That Christ satisfies the desires of their heart in a way that sin never could. B. It is also a demonstration of their hope for a new body. v. 8 1) The fact that Christ rose from the dead is, for us, confirmation that we too will be resurrected. 2) Verse 8 says that “we will live with him.” a) Like the machine, our life was hindered by sin and we were of little value. b) Just as the machine was cleaned with gasoline, our life was cleansed with the blood of Christ. 1 John 1:9 c) We are resurrected to a new and useful life. Conclusion: How is it with you? Do you have a life ruined by sin? If so, accept Christ as your Savior, and He will cleanse you from all your sins. |

Porque los que hemos muerto al pecado, ¿cómo viviremos aún en él? 3 ¿O no sabéis que todos los que hemos sido bautizados en Cristo Jesús, hemos sido bautizados en su muerte? 4 Porque somos sepultados juntamente con él para muerte por el bautismo, a fin de que como Cristo resucitó de los muertos por la gloria del Padre, así también nosotros andemos en vida nueva. 5 Porque si fuimos plantados juntamente con él en la semejanza de su muerte, así también lo seremos en la de su resurrección; 6 sabiendo esto, que nuestro viejo hombre fue crucificado juntamente con él, para que el cuerpo del pecado sea destruido, a fin de que no sirvamos más al pecado. 7 Porque el que ha muerto, ha sido justificado del pecado. 8 Y si morimos con Cristo, creemos que también viviremos con él; 9 sabiendo que Cristo, habiendo resucitado de los muertos, ya no muere; la muerte no se enseñorea más de él. 10 Porque en cuanto murió, al pecado murió una vez por todas; mas en cuanto vive, para Dios vive. Introduccion: Hay mucha confusión en cuanto al bautismo porque la gente es ignorante de lo que la Biblia enseña. Las iglesias primitivas lo entendieron y lo practicaron bien pero con el correr de tiempo la gente se puso más y más ignorante de su propósito y cayó en muchos abusos. La idea creció de que se llega a ser cristiano por medio de bautizarse. Entonces cuando el emperador romano Constantino se convirtió al cristianismo él quería que todos sean cristianos. En el año 324 él ofreció 20 piezas de plata y una túnica blanca a todos que se bautizarían. Doce mil personas inmediatamente se aprovecharon de su oferta. Y si el bautismo hace a uno cristiano, entonces ¿por qué no bautizar a las criaturas también? Entonces esto llegó a ser más y más la costumbre. El bautismo por inmersión fue practicado universalmente hasta el año 1300 cuando la Iglesia Romana empezó a bautizar por verter y más tarde por rociar. Este cambio vino por consideración a la conveniencia. Entonces, nos encontramos en este momento con mucha confusión en cuanto al asunto del bautismo. Queremos quedarnos con la enseñanza simple de la Biblia. No se habla del bautismo en el Antiguo Testamento. En el Nuevo Testamento encontramos a Juan el Bautista bautizando en el desierto y muchos vinieron a él para bautizarse incluso aún Jesús mismo. Cuando Jesús cumplió su ministerio aquí en la tierra él dejó a sus discípulos con el mandamiento de bautizar a sus convertidos. Entonces, bautismos porque: I. Es un mandamiento de Jesús. Mat. 28:16-20 A. Ellos tenían que hacer discípulos primero. 1) No por medio del bautismo. 2) La palabra “discípulo” quiere decir seguidor. Los colegios de aquel entonces no tenían edificios. Los alumnos de un maestro le seguían por donde quería que fuesen y él les enseñaba. Se llamaban sus discípulos. B. La palabra “bautizar” quiere decir sumergir. 1) No podemos cumplir su mandamiento de ninguna otra manera. 2) Es únicamente por sumergir que podemos cumplir con el propósito del bautismo. II. Bautizamos para mostrar públicamente la nueva relación que el creyente tiene para con Dios. A. El bautismo ilustra la muerte a la vida pasada pecaminosa. 1) Por el bautismo el creyente declara que él ha encontrado en Cristo algo mejor que el pecado pudo ofrecerle. 2) Es como si han muerto a la vida pasada. a) La vida pasada ha perdido su atracción para ellos. b) En Rom. 6:1-2 cuando habla del pecado se refiere a la naturaleza del mismo, a distinción de los pecados que son la manifestación de dicha naturaleza. c) No es que no pecan más. El pecado es tanto parte de la vida humana que no hay nadie que no peca. Es que el pecado ha perdido su importancia para ellos. d) Entonces, cuando los que se bautizan van debajo del agua es una demostración que han muerto a la vida pasada. III. Bautizamos para mostrar la vida nueva. Cuando se levantan del agua es para mostrar que han resucitado a una vida nueva. A. Muestra que ahora viven para Dios en vez de para el pecado y para sí mismo. 1) Es que han encontrado en Cristo algo de más valor que el pecado. 2) Que Cristo satisface los deseos de su corazón de una maneraque el pecado jamás pudo. B. Es también una demostración de su esperanza de un cuerpo nuevo. v. 8 1) El hecho de que Cristo resucitó de los muertos es, para nosotros, la confirmación de que nosotros también resucitaremos. 2) V. 8 dice que “viviremos con él”. a) Como la máquina, nuestra vida estaba estorbada por el pecado y éramos de poco valor. b) Como la máquina fue limpiada con nafta, nuestra vida fue limpiada con la sangre de Cristo. I Juan 1:9 c) Estamos resucitados a una vida nueva y útil. Conclusion: ¿Cómo es con usted? ¿Tiene usted una vida arruinada por el pecado? Si es así, acepte a Cristo como su Salvador y él le limpiará de todos sus pecados como dice en I Juan 1:9. Usted será salvado a una vida nueva y útil. Puede conocer el cambio de vida que será manifestado por los que van a bautizarse hoy. 1. ¿Cuántos hay que quieren esta vida nueva? 2. ¿Cuántos hay que ya tienen esta vida nueva y quieren mostrarlo por bautizarse la próxima vez que tenemos un bautismo?
